Pakhandi was the moment I stopped asking what art was supposed to look like.
Inspired by Raja Ravi Varma’s The Maharashtrian Lady, I wanted to place her in the world we live in today. A world where heritage stands beside luxury, where a sari shares the frame with designer labels, sneakers, metro trains, auto rickshaws, and the restless pace of a modern city.
What began as an experiment became a question. Would people stop for the painting, or would they stop for the brands?
They did.
That was the irony. The luxury objects immediately demanded attention, while the woman carrying them remained almost invisible. We admire symbols of success before we notice the person behind them.
Pakhandi, meaning hypocrisy, is my reflection on that contradiction. We celebrate culture, yet chase validation through material things. We honour tradition, while constantly measuring ourselves against the next desire.
Perhaps this painting is less about fashion than it is about the era we have chosen to admire.
